Turquoise is an opaque, blue-to-green mineral and is a hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminium. Good quality naturally hard turquoise is getting harder to find and much of the turquoise found today is soft and needs to be stabilized synthetically. This stone has been valued for thousands of years and was worn by the ancients including Egyptians, Babylonians, Sumerians, Aztecs and Chinese. The word turquoise, comes from a 16th century French word for “Turkish” from where it was first introduced to Europe. Turquoise is a copper phosphate semi precious mineral and is found in many places in the mid-east as well as the USA, Mexico, Tibet and China. Turquoise is also the birthstone for those born in December.
There are many different colors and hues of turquoise from deep green to many shades of blue. Sometimes lines of black matrix can be found in turquoise and one type comes from the Spiderweb turquoise mine in Arizona.
