This is a black opal sourced from a local collection. This opal has striking blue and purple flash throughout the whole stone and is set in a classic silver art nouveau pendant Design.
The stone used here measures 21 by 18 mm or about 3/4 by 7/8 inches.
The entire pendant measures 1 7/8 by just under 1 inch.
The word “Opal”, comes from the Greek word, “Opallos”, which means ‘to see a change of color’.
Most precious opals come from Australia although matrix opals are found in Mexico and other non colorful opals come from Oregon and some are from British Columbia.
Black opal and boulder opals are the rarest types while white opal and matrix opals are more common. Opal is the birthstone for October.
